Martin E. P. Seligman Endorses New Book on Strengths

WASHINGTON, June 25, 2015 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Positive Business DC (PBDC) and Positive Psychology News (PPND) announced today that editors Shannon Polly, MAPP and Kathryn Britton, MAPP have published a new book with articles, research, monologues and poems as well as tangible techniques and exercises that help people leverage their character strengths for higher performance and happiness.

The book honors the late Christopher Peterson who led the large team of psychologists that identified the 24 strengths that are the elements making up good character. His research has shown that these strengths are ubiquitous across culture and time. From Maasai warriors to Mother Teresa, we all have the same strengths to varying degrees.

Proceeds from the book will go to the Christopher Peterson Memorial Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, a fund that supports training of future practitioners of positive psychology.

Martin E. P. Seligman, author of Authentic Happiness and Flourish, writes of the book:

“My friend, Chris Peterson, would have loved this book. It brings to life with personal stories, practical recommendations, wisdom, and humor the dry scholarship that he (with an assist from me) did in Character Strengths and Virtues. Chris was very down-to-earth, and I am sure he would have concurred in my enthusiastically recommending this book to everyone who works with character strengths in the real world.”

The book’s launch coincides with the World Congress on Positive Psychology on June 25th in Orlando, Florida. Character Strengths is the third book in the Positive Psychology News series, joining Gratitude and Resilience.

“This is among the best books in all of positive psychology,” says Jon Haidt author of The Happiness Hypothesis and The Righteous Mind. “It takes one of the most important areas of research – the character strengths – and makes it as accessible, as practical, and as inspiring as could be. I particularly love that it is written for sharing. Every couple and every family should have a copy. This will become my standard dinner party gift, instead of a bottle of wine.”
